Why build the town of Laurent, South Dakota for sign languages users?

Because it is a worthy endeavor! There is a huge problem in the United States. Children and adults who are deaf are undereducated, underemployed, and isolated, but you can be part of the solution.

The story of our plans to build a new town, where crops and animals now grow, has captured world wide attention through the media. A community for 2500 full time residents and 5500 visitors, students, sport enthusiasts, workshop and convention attendees and travelers, can be built on only 320 acres in rural McCook County, SD. The Master Plan can be viewed on the website, www.laurentsd.com. For the first time in our history, a town will be built with the highest technological information available planned into the infrastructure. Only in Laurent, will anyone who is deaf and depends on a visual communication system, be able to participate fully in every part of daily community life. The opportunity to own and operate businesses, the right to fully participate in our children’s academic lives without barriers, and the privilege of running for elected office and serving as a elected or appointed official, will be dreams we can now live. Signers can stop dreaming and start LIVING the American dream.

What can you do? We are asking you to think about $10 or more.

True, it won’t buy much today, maybe a 1/4 tank of gas or two fancy Starbucks coffees, but we are still interested.

Multiply that by 50,000 donations and you have $500,000 — not small at all.

The Laurent Institute, a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization, is asking you to make a donation. The Laurent Institute’s mission is to help make the new town for signers a reality through fundraising, grantwriting, capital campaigns. Once the funds are secured, The Laurent Institute will focus on making economic development, social and health services, community services and other essential services fully accessible in ASL and English to future residents of the town.

Funds donated to the non-profit The Laurent Institute will be used in 3 major ways:

• 10% will go directly into an Endowment Fund. It will first be collected into a savings account, and as it grows, it will be invested so that part of every gift will be there to support the new community of Laurent for years and years to come.

• Part of the funding will go to operating and land development expenses.

• Lastly, we will use the funds to support grant writing efforts. Many times grants require matching funds or a certain percentage to be raised by the group applying for the grant. The Laurent Institute will use some monies towards these efforts.

Please do two things to help us. Write your check today and send your and any other collection donations to us at:
