A surprise in the polls…
Final count… ok, the poll is still open but I think we get the picture.
Basically, the top vote getters were: School, Small Grocery Store (Organic/Natural stuff), Medical Clinic. And Fourth place had a 3-way tie between: city-wide WiFi, bookstore & cafe, and open captioned first-run movie theater.
Medical clinic surprised me. I knew it was important, but in top 3? Especially when there’s a good sized hospital 20 to 40 minutes away and an excellent (and talk about EASY in and out!) clinic in Salem, S.D. - 3 to 10 miles away.
Question… do you think the poll gives us a good picture of what’s considered as a critical need in a small, new town? If so, why? If not, can you share in comments reasons why?

How about a gas station and a hardware store? Gotta have a hardware store, especially if new construction is going on. Sometimes a person has to go back 3 or 4 times a day!

It doesn’t really surprise me that a medical clinic is on the top 3 list. Because they want doctors and their staffs who can sign. Some of us are getting tired of dealing w/ the accessibility issue at medical clincs or hospitals. Having a medical clinc in Laurent will give signers great opporunties to be a doctor or to be a medical-related staff.A question - can you give us a reason why are we having this poll? If one doesn’t make the top 3-5, does that mean they will not be existed in Laurent within 3-5 years? Or will you leave that to business investors to decide? Thanks,Eric

Basically, this gives us priority areas to focus on adding to the new community. I don’t want us to focus on building indoor pool because we think that’s cool and may bring new people… while in reality, they are looking for something different. Sure enough, indoor pool isn’t as important as school, grocery store and medical clinic. We can not have a lot of things in the first 1 to 3 years of a new small town. Many things would be added over the time, most by entrepreneurs themselves.

When do you think you will begin selling property for future homes? I am retiring in 4 years and seriously examining all the options. Thanks and good luck! Teri /

I think that whatever come to a person’s mind first or second or third is certainly important to that person. You have like maybe 75 that responded so far. That is a very small number so far from thousands that would love to move to a town like this. I think, in my opinion, the key to this town is to pull in jobs that is attractive enough in bringing educated people that can serve good role models and will serve a dominio effect thru "word of mouth" and turn into a martha vineyard 2.
